Closing Door Prank: The 10 Funniest Videos and How to Do It Safely

Pop-art meme of a dad pulling a bedroom door shut as his son sprints down the hallway and stops short, with the caption Race you to the door!

New here? Start with What Is a Prank? Meaning, Types, History & How to Pull One Right.

The closing door prank is the new family video trend: a parent stands at a bedroom door, tells the kids to run to them as fast as they can, then swings the door shut just as they arrive. The kids skid to a stop, the door clicks closed in front of them, and their face is the whole joke. It took off on TikTok and YouTube Shorts in late October 2026 and every family channel seems to have filmed one since. Below are the funniest ten, how to film your own, and the one rule that keeps it funny.

What Is the Closing Door Prank?

It is a fake race. You hold a door open at the end of a hallway, crouch down, and call "ready, set, go!" Your kids sprint toward you, sure they are about to win a hug or a high five. At the last second you close the door in front of them. Nobody gets hit: the runner pulls up, the door shuts with a soft click, and the camera catches the betrayal. Then you open the door again and everyone laughs, or one kid demands a rematch.

The best clips have three beats: the hype (you sound really excited), the run, and the stunned stare at a closed door.

How to Do the Closing Door Prank

  1. Pick the right door. An inward-opening bedroom door off a carpeted hallway is ideal. Skip heavy doors, glass doors, doors at the top of stairs and anything on a tile or wood floor where socks slide.
  2. Set the camera low. Prop your phone on the floor or a shelf on your side of the door, filming down the hallway, so it catches the run and the face.
  3. Sell the race. Crouch in the doorway, sound excited, count them in: "Ready, set, GO!"
  4. Close early, not late. Start closing when they are still a few big steps away, so they see it coming and can stop. Stop the door with your hand and foot so it only clicks shut. The joke is the near miss, never the hit.
  5. Open up and reveal. Swing it open, laugh with them and give them the hug they ran for. A quick "you got pranked!" turns a betrayed face into a giggle.

The Rule That Keeps It Funny

The door never touches anyone. Hold it the whole time, keep fingers and faces clear of the hinge side, and close it early enough that a running kid can stop. Leave out toddlers who cannot stop on a dime yet, and anyone who is genuinely upset by it. If the first run ends in real tears, do not go again; give the hug and call it there. The best clips in the list above all end with someone laughing, which is the point of a harmless prank.

Reveal Lines That Land

  • "You really thought you were winning that, huh?"
  • "The door says hi."
  • "Rematch? Okay, this time for real." (Then actually let them win.)
  • "Prize for the fastest runner is a hug. Come here."
