The best Thanksgiving pranks are table-side tricks that get the whole family laughing without anyone touching the food: a promotion to the kids' table, a turkey gobble from under the tablecloth, a TV that loses signal right before kickoff. Thanksgiving 2026 is Thursday, November 26. Here are 15 harmless pranks for family dinner, plus the classic food pranks to leave alone and why.
The Rule: Leave the Food Alone
Someone spent all day cooking. Pranks that tamper with food (salt in the sugar bowl, swapped stuffing, mystery fillings) waste that work, can make someone sick and can set off an allergy. They also tend to upset the cook more than they amuse anyone else. Every prank below happens around the table, never on the plate.
15 Harmless Thanksgiving Pranks
At the table
- The kids' table promotion. Swap the place cards so the most serious adult in the family ends up at the kids' table, complete with a crayon and a coloring sheet at their seat.
- Nickname place cards. Write place cards with family nicknames nobody has used in 20 years. Watch everyone hunt for "Sir Gravy" and "Little Pumpkin."
- The gobble. Hide a phone under the table and play a turkey gobble from our animal sounds every time someone reaches for seconds.
- The whoopee chair. Slip a whoopee cushion onto the chair at the head of the table just before the host sits down to say a few words.
- The googly-eye centerpiece. Stick googly eyes on the decorative pumpkins and gourds so the centerpiece watches everyone eat.
- Rubber spider napkins. Tuck a rubber spider into one folded napkin. Only for a relative who will scream, then laugh.
Phone pranks
- The turkey called. Use our Fake Call to make your phone ring with a caller named "The Turkey" while the bird is being carved. Answer, listen, and say "it says it has some regrets."
- The turkey texted. Make a screenshot with our Fake Text Message generator of the turkey texting "please tell grandma I was delicious" and pass it around at dessert.
- The dying phone. Put the fake low battery screen on your uncle's phone right as he goes to check the score.
- Group chat poll. Start a poll in the family group chat: "Who brought the store-bought pie?" Give the options as everyone's names but yours.
Football and the TV
- No signal at kickoff. Cast our no signal TV screen to the TV just as the game starts. Give it ten seconds of panic, then switch it back.
- The cracked screen. Leave a tablet showing our fake broken screen next to the TV and say "I think someone threw the remote."
Arrivals and after dinner
- Bubble wrap welcome. Put bubble wrap under the welcome mat so every arriving guest pops their way in.
- The nap award. Print a certificate for "Most Likely to Fall Asleep After Pie" and present it formally to whoever dozes off first, with photos.
- The leftovers label. Label a container of leftovers "DEFINITELY NOT FOR UNCLE MIKE" and leave it at the front of the fridge. The food inside stays exactly as it was.
Food Pranks to Skip
You will see these all over the internet in November. They are not worth it:
- Swapping salt and sugar, or salting the pie.
- Hiding things inside the stuffing or the mashed potatoes.
- Spiking dishes with hot sauce or anything someone could be allergic to.
- Any prank that ruins a dish someone made.
Keep the Peace
Thanksgiving tables already come with enough opinions. Pick one or two pranks, aim them at the relatives who love a joke, and reveal them quickly. If someone is having a hard year, leave them out of it.
Hosting the kids too? Our easy pranks need nothing but stuff already in the house.
